A big share of Brooklyn's dryers don't live in laundry rooms. They live in closets — stacked on top of the washer, wedged behind a bifold door, in a hallway alcove sized to the inch. Stackable pairs, one-piece laundry centers, LG WashTowers, Samsung towers: if you live in a condo, co-op, or renovated apartment in this borough, there's a good chance your dryer is one of them.
Callers ask us the same three questions about these setups, usually in the same order. Can you even clean a stackable's vent? Do you have to take the stack apart? And why does the laundry closet turn into a sauna every time the dryer runs?

Why Brooklyn is full of stackables
Stackables are what happens when New York real estate meets the desire to stop hauling laundry to the basement. Renovations across the borough have spent two decades converting hall closets and kitchen corners into laundry closets, and a stacked pair is the only footprint that fits. Condo developers spec them by default. Co-op boards approve them because they tuck away.
The result is a huge population of dryers installed in the tightest possible spaces — which, from a vent-cleaning perspective, is the interesting part. The closet was found space, so the duct route out of it was improvised: up through a soffit, sideways through a wall cavity, snaking to whatever exterior wall or roof was reachable. Short, straight duct runs are exactly what these installations don't have. Why stackable vents clog faster
Four things gang up on a closet stackable, and none of them are the machine's fault.
The transition hose is almost always compromised. The gap between the back of a stacked unit and the closet wall is a few inches. The flexible hose connecting dryer to wall duct gets folded, kinked, or crushed flat the day the unit is pushed into place, and every crease is a lint trap. On a large fraction of the stackables we service, a significant share of the total restriction is in that last three feet of hose.
The runs are long and bendy. As above — improvised routes mean extra elbows, and every elbow is a place lint settles. A closet stackable can have double the equivalent duct length of a freestanding basement dryer.
Heat recirculates in the closet. A dryer needs cool intake air to work with. A closed closet feeds the dryer its own waste heat, cycles run hotter and longer, and lint bakes harder inside the duct.
Nobody ever looks at it. A freestanding dryer's hose gets glanced at every time someone drops a sock behind the machine. A stackable's connections are invisible and untouched for years — problems compound in the dark. Out of sight, out of maintenance.
The hot laundry closet
If the closet doors are warm to the touch while the dryer runs — or the closet blasts you with heat when you open it mid-cycle — take it seriously. That heat is energy that was supposed to leave the building through the duct. A well-vented dryer warms its closet a little; a restricted one turns it into an oven, because the exhaust has nowhere to go and the cabinet sheds its heat into a space the size of a phone booth.
Two things are true at once here. First, closets need ventilation by design — louvered doors, an undercut, or a makeup-air path — and some renovations skipped that. Second, and far more often in our experience, the closet used to be fine and got hot over time. Closets don't gradually lose their ventilation; ducts gradually lose their airflow. A laundry closet that has been getting hotter season over season is a duct symptom, and it travels with the others: longer cycles, hot-but-damp loads, and lint dust collecting on the closet floor and door louvers.
WashTowers, laundry centers, and the towers
A note on the newer single-chassis machines, because owners ask if they're a special case. An LG WashTower or Samsung tower vents exactly like any other dryer — one exhaust duct out the back. What changes is access: the control modules and the sheer height of the chassis make the behind-unit clearance even tighter than a traditional stacked pair, and the transition hose situation is correspondingly worse. Same physics, less room to work — which is a description of our job, not a reason it can't be done.
One important distinction: if your combo unit has no duct at all — no hose, no wall connection, drains like a washer — you have a ventless or heat-pump machine, and this article isn't about you. Those still need maintenance, but of a different kind — internal filters and heat-exchanger cleaning per the manufacturer's manual — and it is appliance service rather than vent work, so it is not something we offer.
Do you have to move the unit?
The question every stackable owner actually cares about. The honest answer: usually not, sometimes partially, and when we do, moving it is our job, not yours.
Most of the cleaning happens along the run and at the exterior termination, working rotary brushes through the duct while a HEPA vacuum captures what comes loose — none of which requires touching the machine. The part that involves the unit is the connection behind it: inspecting the transition hose and cleaning the first stretch of duct. In many closets there's enough clearance to reach the connection by sliding the unit forward a few inches on its front feet, which is a two-technician lift-and-walk, not a disassembly. Un-stacking the pair is the rare case, not the routine one.
What we won't do is skip the back of the machine because it's awkward. A cleaning that stops at the parts that were easy to reach leaves the crushed, lint-packed transition hose — often the single worst restriction in the system — exactly as it was. If the hose is damaged, we replace it with proper material while everything is pulled out, and the unit goes back where it lived, connected correctly, with breathing room for the hose this time.

Warning signs on a stackable, specifically
All eleven classic warning signs apply, but closet installations have their own accent:
- The closet or its doors get noticeably hot during cycles.
- Lint dust accumulates on the closet floor, the door louvers, or the top of the washer — lint escaping at a bad hose connection.
- A damp or musty smell inside the closet, from saturated exhaust air leaking instead of leaving.
- Loads need a second cycle, especially towels.

FAQs
Can you clean the vent without moving the stackable at all?
Often, yes — when the duct run and termination are accessible and the behind-unit connection can be reached from the side or above, the unit stays put. We move it (or slide it partially out) when that's the only way to do the connection and hose properly. What we don't offer is the version of the service that skips whatever was hard to reach.
Do you take the washer and dryer apart — un-stack them?
Rarely. Sliding the unit forward for access is the normal worst case. Full un-stacking comes up mainly when a hose replacement can't be done any other way in an unusually tight closet, and we'll tell you before we start if your setup looks like that case.

The hose behind our unit is the white plastic accordion kind. Is that okay?
No — plastic and thin foil accordion hoses are the material we most often find crushed, torn, or packed solid behind stackables, and plastic in particular has no business carrying dryer exhaust. If we find one, we'll recommend replacing it with proper semi-rigid metal while the unit is out. It's a small add-on that removes the system's weakest link.
Is a hot laundry closet dangerous or just annoying?
In the short term it's mostly a performance symptom — heat that should have left the building. But it belongs to the same family as every other restricted-airflow sign, and the endpoint of ignored restriction is the one nobody wants.
