A few times a week, someone in Brooklyn calls us and reads an error code off their dryer's display. "It says d80." "The Check Vent light won't go off." "It says restricted airflow, but I just cleaned the lint screen."
Here is the thing most people don't know: for about the last decade, dryer manufacturers have been building airflow sensors into their machines specifically because clogged vents were destroying dryers and starting fires. The dryer is not guessing. It is measuring how hard it has to push to move air through your duct, and it is telling you — in its own clumsy vocabulary — that the duct is not moving enough air.
This guide translates that vocabulary, brand by brand: what LG's d80, d90, and d95 codes mean, what Samsung's vent-check warnings are doing, what the Check Vent light on a Whirlpool or Maytag is measuring, why these warnings show up on brand-new dryers, and why they often stay on after a homeowner cleans the vent themselves.

The sensor is measuring your duct, not your dryer
Every warning in this article works on the same principle. A dryer moves hot, wet air out of the drum, through a transition hose, into the duct in your wall, and out of the building. When lint builds up anywhere along that path, the blower has to work against more resistance. The dryer can feel that — either as back-pressure at the blower, as exhaust temperatures climbing faster than they should, or as a dedicated sensor reading in the exhaust path.
So when the display says "check vent," the machine is not reporting a fault in itself. It is reporting a fault in the duct system attached to it — the part of the system no appliance repair visit will touch. That distinction matters, because it decides who you should call. An airflow warning is a duct problem wearing an appliance costume.
LG: Flow Sense and the d80, d90, d95 codes
LG's airflow system is called Flow Sense, and it is the most explicit in the industry. Instead of a single warning light, it estimates how blocked the exhaust path is and reports it as a code:
- d80 — the duct is roughly 80 percent blocked. Air is still moving, but not much of it.
- d90 — roughly 90 percent blocked.
- d95 — roughly 95 percent or more blocked. Almost no air is leaving the building.
A d80 dryer will still finish loads — slowly. A d95 dryer is essentially tumbling clothes in a sealed hot box. The moisture has nowhere to go, the heat has nowhere to go, and the machine's safety thermostats start doing the only thing they can do: cutting the heat, stretching the cycle, or shutting the dryer down mid-load.
Two practical notes on LG codes. First, the code appears at the start or end of a cycle, and restarting the dryer can make it disappear for a while — that clears the display, not the duct. Second, we take the number seriously but not literally: the estimate depends on the length and layout of your run. What d80 versus d95 reliably tells you is direction and urgency.
Samsung: vent-check warnings and heat faults
Newer Samsung dryers run an airflow check and will put a vent-blockage warning on the display when the exhaust path is restricted. The wording varies by model year — some show a dedicated vent indicator, some spell it out on the touchscreen.
The other way a Samsung tells you about a clogged duct is less polite: heat-related fault codes. When exhaust air can't leave, heat builds up inside the cabinet, and the dryer throws a high-temperature fault and stops. Owners understandably read a heat fault as "my heating element is broken." Sometimes it is. But on the machines we see, the heat fault is very often downstream of an airflow problem — the element is fine, it just has no airflow to dump its heat into. If a Samsung is throwing heat faults and your loads have been coming out slow or damp, get the vent inspected before you pay for parts.
Whirlpool, Maytag, and GE: the Check Vent light
Whirlpool and Maytag (same corporate family) put a Check Vent indicator on many of their models. It comes on when the dryer detects restricted airflow during the cycle, and it stays on until the machine sees normal airflow again. GE and other brands do the same job with slightly different labels — an airflow icon, a "check filter and vent" message, a blinking vent indicator.
The important shared behavior: these lights are latched to what the sensor saw during a run. Power-cycling the dryer may turn the light off; if the duct is still restricted, it will be back within a load or two. A Check Vent light that keeps returning is the machine telling you the same thing three different ways.
"But the dryer is brand new"
This is one of the most common versions of the call, and it makes people doubt the warning: a brand-new dryer, first week in the apartment, and it is already showing d90 or Check Vent. The dryer must be defective, right?
Almost never. Think about what actually changed: the machine is new, but it is bolted onto the same duct that has been in that wall for twenty years. Your old dryer had no airflow sensor — it was suffering through that duct silently, taking two cycles a load, and you adapted to it so gradually you never noticed. The new dryer is the first machine in the apartment's history that can say something about it, and it is saying it on day one.
Installers deliver and connect dryers. They do not clean duct runs — it is not their job, and most Brooklyn runs can't be cleaned in the ten minutes an installation visit allows. So a new dryer with an airflow warning is not a lemon. It is a diagnosis of the building, and in our experience it is nearly always correct. "The light stays on after I cleaned the vent"
The second most common version: a homeowner buys a brush kit, pulls a satisfying wad of lint out of the first few feet of duct, runs a load — and the Check Vent light comes right back.
The kit did work. It just worked on the wrong part of the run. Consumer brush kits reach a few feet in from the dryer side. In a typical Brooklyn building, the restriction that trips the sensor is deeper: packed into an elbow where the duct turns up inside the wall, matted against the termination flap outside, or spread along a twenty-plus-foot concealed run the brush never touched. The sensor doesn't care that the first three feet are spotless — it responds to the total resistance of the whole path.
There is also a mechanical suspect worth checking before anything else: the transition hose behind the dryer. If the machine was pushed back against the wall during installation or cleaning, a crushed or kinked hose produces exactly the same warning as a clogged duct. Pull the dryer forward a few inches and look. A flattened foil hose is a five-minute fix and a very cheap victory.
If the hose is fine and the light persists, the fix is a full-run cleaning — from the connection behind the machine to the termination outside — with the result verified by measurement, not by vibes. On a properly cleaned run, the dryer's own sensor agrees with our meter: the warning goes away because the condition it measures is gone.
Can you keep using the dryer while the light is on?
Our honest answer, the same one we give our own family: it depends on which warning, and on what else is happening.
- Early-stage warnings — d80, a first-time Check Vent light, loads running long but finishing: schedule a cleaning soon and use the dryer sparingly in the meantime. You are in the machine-wear and money-wasting zone, not yet the emergency zone.
- Late-stage warnings — d95, a dryer that shuts itself off mid-cycle, thermal cutoffs tripping: stop planning laundry around it and get the run cleaned now. The dryer is already protecting itself; every load is a stress test.
- Any warning plus a burning smell or a hot-to-the-touch cabinet: stop using the dryer, unplug it, and for gas dryers close the gas valve. What a proper fix looks like
Whatever the brand, the sequence that actually clears an airflow warning for good is the same, and it is what we do on every visit: measure the airflow at the start, clean the entire run with rotary brushes while a HEPA vacuum captures what comes loose, check and replace a crushed transition hose if that is part of the problem, clear the exterior termination, and measure again at the end. You see both numbers. The dryer's sensor sees the difference on the very next load.

My dryer says "restricted airflow" but the lint screen is clean. How?
The lint screen is the first six inches of a duct system that might be thirty feet long. The screen catches most lint; the fraction that gets past it has been accumulating in the duct for years. A clean screen and a clogged duct is the normal combination, not a contradiction — in fact, a screen that suddenly collects less lint than usual is itself a warning sign that air has stopped moving.
Does the code clear itself after a cleaning?
Yes. These systems latch on bad airflow and release on good airflow. Once the run is actually clean, the warning clears within a cycle or two on its own. If it doesn't, something real is still restricting the path — most often a crushed transition hose behind the machine or a termination flap that isn't opening.
Can the sensor just be wrong?
Occasionally. A failed moisture or thermistor sensor exists as a possibility, and a crushed hose can impersonate a clogged duct. But treat the warning as real until proven otherwise, because it almost always is. The inexpensive checks come first: hose condition, then a duct inspection with a measurement. Concluding "faulty sensor" without measuring the airflow is how people end up running a d95 dryer for a year.
Will ignoring the light damage the dryer?
Yes, and this is the expensive part. Chronic restricted airflow is behind most of the premature dryer failures we see: blown thermal fuses, burned-out heating elements, and cooked control boards, all from heat that had nowhere to go. A vent cleaning costs a fraction of any of those repairs — which is exactly why manufacturers added the sensors.
Is it more urgent on a gas dryer?
Treat it with more respect, yes. A gas dryer's exhaust carries combustion byproducts as well as moisture and lint, so a badly blocked duct is a reason to act promptly rather than eventually — and a reason we recommend working carbon-monoxide alarms near any gas appliance regardless of vent condition.
Who do I call — an appliance tech or a vent cleaner?
For an airflow-specific warning (d80/d90/d95, Check Vent, vent blockage), start with the vent: it is the likelier cause and the cheaper visit, and it can be verified with a before-and-after measurement on the spot. If the run measures clean and the warning persists, then it is an appliance problem, and you will go into that repair conversation knowing the duct is ruled out.
