If we had to name the single most common sentence spoken into our phone line, it would be some version of this one: "My dryer takes two cycles to dry anything." Sometimes it's three. Sometimes it's "the towels are never dry," or "the clothes come out hot but they're still damp," or "I basically just run it again automatically now."
Here is what we want you to take from this article, up front: a dryer that needs two cycles is not old, tired, or due for replacement. In the overwhelming majority of homes we visit, it is a healthy machine pushing against a clogged exhaust duct — and after the duct is cleaned, the same "dying" dryer finishes a full load in one cycle again. People have bought new dryers over this. The new dryer took two cycles too, because the duct came with the apartment.

Drying is airflow, not heat

A dryer removes water by moving air. The heater warms air so it can absorb more moisture, the drum tumbles clothes through that air, and then — this is the critical step — the blower pushes the now-saturated air out of the machine, through the duct, and out of the building, making room for dry air to absorb more. The exhaust duct is not an accessory to that process. It is the process. A dryer that cannot exhaust saturated air is a machine tumbling clothes in their own steam, no matter how good its heater is.
So when airflow drops, heat is the thing you still feel — the clothes come out hot — but moisture removal is the thing that stops. Hot-but-damp is the signature symptom of a restricted duct, and it's the detail that tells us the heater is fine before we've even seen the machine.
Why the second cycle "works"
The second cycle is what convinces people the dryer is merely weak rather than broken: run it again and the clothes do, eventually, come out dry. Here's what's actually happening. A restricted duct doesn't stop moisture removal completely — it slows it. Each cycle claws out a fraction of the water. Given twice or three times the run time, the machine limps to the finish line.
That "it still works if I run it twice" adaptation is exactly why clogged vents go unaddressed for years. The failure is gradual, the workaround is easy, and nobody's Tuesday is ruined. Meanwhile the machine spends every one of those extra hours running hot with lint packed somewhere in its exhaust path — which is a wear problem, a money problem, and eventually a safety problem.
Rule out the cheap stuff first — a ten-minute checklist
We would rather you spend ten minutes on this list than book a visit you don't need. In order of likelihood:
- Wash the lint screen, don't just clear it. If you use dryer sheets or liquid softener, an invisible film builds up on the screen mesh and blocks air. Run water over the screen: if it pools instead of flowing through, scrub the screen with dish soap and a soft brush, rinse, dry, done.
- Check your load size. A stuffed drum can't tumble, and clothes that can't tumble can't meet moving air. If the drum is more than about three-quarters full, that alone stretches cycles.
- Check what the washer is handing over. If clothes are coming out of the washer dripping rather than damp, the dryer is being asked to remove double the water. A washer that has quietly stopped spinning properly presents as a "dryer problem" in every household we've seen it in.
- Look behind the dryer. If the machine is shoved tight against the wall, the flexible transition hose may be crushed flat. A crushed hose restricts airflow exactly like a clogged duct. Pull the dryer forward a few inches and look.
- Sensor dry vs. timed dry. If sensor cycles end early with damp clothes but a 60-minute timed cycle finishes the job, note that detail — it matters, and there's an FAQ on it below.
If you went through all five and drying is still slow, the odds now overwhelmingly favor the duct.
The signs that point at the vent
Beyond hot-but-damp, the duct announces itself in consistent ways. Drying time that crept up over months rather than failing overnight — clogs accumulate gradually; broken parts fail abruptly. Every load affected, not just the heavy ones. The dryer's cabinet hot to the touch, or the laundry area noticeably warm and humid while it runs. Little or no air movement at the exterior vent flap while the dryer is on. A lint screen that mysteriously collects less lint than it used to — because air has slowed down enough that lint settles in the duct instead of reaching the screen.

It isn't — you bypassed the clogged duct, and the machine got its airflow back. That's diagnostic gold. Start with a repair tech if the story is a hard fault. No heat at all from the first minute, a drum that won't turn, a machine that's dead — those are appliance failures, not airflow failures.
And if a repair tech tells you to clean the vent — believe them. Appliance technicians see the downstream carnage of clogged ducts constantly: thermal fuses that keep blowing, heating elements that keep burning out, blower motors worn from pushing against back-pressure. When the tech replaces the fuse and says "this will happen again until the vent is cleaned," that is not upselling. That is a professional telling you the fuse was a symptom.
